On May 29, 1997, Governor Angus King approved LD 1804, "An Act to Restructure the State's Electric Industry." This bill was codified as Chapter 32 of Title 35A, M.R.S.A. The Restructuring Act allows electric power to be sold directly to retail consumers by largely deregulated power providers competing with one another. The delivery of power over transmission and distribution lines will continue to be a monopoly service provided by a fully regulated utility. March 1, 2000, is the starting date for electric competition.
