In the spring of 1998, Governor John Rowland signed into law one of the most comprehensive pieces of legislation in Connecticut's history, making Connecticut the 18th state to restructure its electric utility industry. Electric restructuring, or deregulation as it's also called, will begin on January 1, 2000.

In the year 2000 and for the first time, Connecticut consumers have the ability to choose their electric supplier, the company that produces their electricity. Consumer's electricity will continue to be delivered by their local utility, which is now called their electric distribution company. Whether consumers choose an electric supplier or not, their lights will stay on. This Web site will tell consumers all the details.
